Mr. Ronald K. Noble, Secretary General, Interpol
Message
Children are among the most vulnerable individuals in our society and have an unassailable right to be protected from all forms of abuse.
At INTERPOL we are committed to eradicating the abuse of children in all its forms – notably violent and sexual abuse and child trafficking – and have passed several resolutions making crimes against children one of our priorities. We work with partners across the world to raise awareness of crimes against children and to act on a global level to identify those individuals and crime groups who target children.
One of our major tools in the fight against child sexual abuse is the INTERPOL Child Abuse Database which, since 2001, has helped rescue more than 700 victims of sexual abuse. Thanks to funding from the G8 we are developing the database into an increasingly sophisticated crime-fighting tool. INTERPOL is also a partner within the Virtual Global Taskforce: an alliance of law enforcement agencies from around the world working together to fight online child abuse.
As crimes and criminal practices evolve, we are constantly innovating new investigative techniques. In 2007 we launched Operation VICO, our first public appeal to identify a man photographed sexually abusing children in a series of images posted on the internet. Within days the suspect was apprehended and arrested – demonstrating a successful collaboration with the general public and world media. Operation IDENT followed in 2008 with similar success.
We are pleased to support the CyberDodo initiative and to reinforce our commitment to preventing and eradicating the abuse of children, wherever they may be in the world.
