Message d'introduction du Haut Commissaire

"Know your rights with CyberDodo"

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all, Excellencies, Members of civil society, Colleagues and Students, to this event which is being organized in the context of the Council’s first ‘Annual full-day meeting on the Rights of the Child’.

I would like to say a few words at the outset of this gathering, which is being organized by the Permanent Missions of Uruguay and Czech Republic, with the support of my Office. The programme of today’s full-day meeting on the Rights of the Child is being enriched by the presence of several personalities and experts; it was therefore felt that it could be complemented by an initiative of a different and lighter nature, yet of great significance for its outreach potential and for the very audience it targets, all children worldwide.

In the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, this event marks the official launching of an on-line project, which is intended to bring the Convention and the rights enshrined therein closer to the very beneficiaries of the Convention, all children and school students around the world. I would like to acknowledge and thank the creators of this project, Mr. Manuel Martin and Mrs Alice Martin.

This innovative Internet Platform aims to make children’s rights better known to children, by using a children- and family-friendly language; it speaks to them and their families and teachers in an accessible way, by using visuals understandable even by smaller children.

This project, which has enjoyed the support of all my predecessors and was developed in consultation with children’s rights experts, consists mainly of some 40 cartoons featuring a funny character, a dodo-bird, which after returning to earth after its extinction becomes a spokesperson of children’s rights. It is complemented by other material such as inter-active games and tool-kits.

Before I leave the floor to the creators of the Cyberdodo, who will show in a videoclip the development and concept of this project, I would also like to acknowledge the presence on this podium of the Ambassadors of Uruguay and Czech Republic, as well as the Ambassadors of Mauritius and Monaco (in the floor), and thank them for their support to this initiative.
